Nobody would willingly split off, but I just mean maybe things would make more sense if an arbiter forced a 3-party system.

The need for a coalition would be more obvious, and you wouldn't have "Republicans are fighting among themselves" headlines (though you could probably still say Conservatives are fighting themselves)
