The other quote that people often get wrong is "money is the root of all evil." It's actually "the love of money is the root of all evil"

That and "an eye for an eye" seem designed to purposefully misunderstand the intent of the scripture.

"No more than an eye for an eye" is a caution against punishment out of proportion to the crime, not a entreaty to always enforce the most severe punishment.

"The love of money is the root of all evil" is a reminder that putting money above all else leads to bad things, not that money itself is bad.
