I love how much of a toddler he sounds like when he starts whining about "unfair".

that's usually burned out of a person by 12. The world is not "fair". Things happen randomly for which you did nothing to have it happen, but it happened. It wasn't a choice you made, an act of inaction that caused It. It just happened.
Not to read too much into it but the fact that he views things as "unfair" seems to say something about him. I really do wonder if he realizes that he can't control everything that happens to him. (He may find that out in the next 3+ years)...
