That's really the problem with a lot of the Middle East. There is no good or right answer. There is no right person to back and the factions are so -- (edited)

fractious nothing holds anyway. Essentially the prior administration's approach was to try to provide some counterbalance to really bad stuff, while not interfering enough (or putting enough resources and people at risk) to determine an outcome (since no outcome had the benefit of being the "right" one). Essentially try to let it resolve itself while trying to keep things from being too horrible. It wasn't cowardly and it wasn't stupid. It was a thoughtful response, but it doesn't produce a result you can be proud of either.
