When do you buy someone a house warming gift? When they first move in or after a few weeks or so when they've settled in?

I've never had to buy a housewarming gift for someone and a very close friend is moving into his first house tomorrow. I was just talking to him about our plans to move his stuff on Sunday and I realized I have to get him a gift but I have no idea when you give it or what you give. Stupid adulthood!
