STIS: I found an old (c 1920) diamond* ring among my genealogy boxes I figure I should have appraised... Anybody been through that process?

*I'm no expert but something about it makes me think it's not a real diamond. I wouldn't want to spend money appraising something worth nothing, so can I get it appraised for less than $50? Should I go with a certified specialist or just walk into any diamond store in downtown DC?
