many jewelry stores can give a quick free appraisal just to tell you if it is real or glass. i'd check a few out this way to get a credible consensus -- (edited)

before going thru and getting a full appraisal on it.
also, never trust the old saying if it cuts glass, it is a diamond.
glass cuts glass.
