Marvel made changes to the line, some worked (miles morales Spider-man, Ms. Marvel, Amadeus Cho as Hulk, Jane Foster as Thor) and others didn't

The old timers aren't rejecting because of competition for eyeballs. They're rejecting because "These aren't my characters". They're not giving it a chance. And they're not spending that money elsewhere either.
There's a segment of retailers in the various retail orgs I'm in, who are older, who bitch at the Marvel higher ups because of what they've done to Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, THe Odinson (og Thor) and the others. We are at a generational change in readership. I saw this 20 years ago and I'm seeing it now...and it's going to be painful. But Marvel and the other companies *have* to change to stay relevant and interesting for their long term growth.
Marvel does have some success at getting new eyeballs from younger women and men. Squirrel Girl, Ms. marvel, Spider-gwe, Miles Morales and others. They sell well, just not as well as the classic lineups did. I think there is a happy medium in there to be honest they just haven't hit it yet....
