But many people are seeing a wholesale change in characters to be more diverse instead of creating new diverse characters...

good stories are the key, but you have a woman Thor, a young black IronMan...and a new Spider-Man (Morales)...
people see changing demographics replacing their actual heroes...
That's poor writing where Tony Stark is replaced, where Thor is replaced, where Peter Parker is replaced in short order by a more diverse group of characters.
That's shoe-horned plotting and a weak wave of "Because we need to."
You should be able to get to a world where IronMan, Spiderman and Thor are joined by ... instead of replaced even short term.
