They told Sandra and Varner they were voting for Tai, but told Tai they were voting for Sandra. Then pre-tribal, Tai told Varner that the vote was Sandra. This lead to people being unsure about Tai.
Then when tribal started, Tai made the point that he was unsure about what was going on and that the vote may be for him. Zeke made the point of "How can we trust you if you say you want to work with us but then you also say that you can't trust us."
Then as Tai was talking, everyone behind him started talking about how they were all cool with voting for Tai. Kind of putting it together on the fly.
Sandra and Varner bought that and voted for Tai.
Even though Tai had 2 immunity idols, he didn't play one, which makes me think that despite the discussion, he was comfortable with the fact that the vote was for Sandra, which it was.
OR Tai is just dumb and got lucky. Jury is still out.
