truth is, the best campaign intentions/criticisms go by the wayside when you're the guy in the Oval Office.
Obama said XYZ about Bush's foreign policy and then once in office, he continued a fair portion of the things he condemned. Why -- because it's easy to say how you'd make the SS-USA change course significantly but once you get the wheel, you realize it's a lot harder.
Trump's seeing that today (after decades of slippery slope and mis-applied military processes that have led to a no-win situation in Syria).

The anti-Trump team wants peace for people, but some don't realize that it takes guns to bring peace in many cases. Trump's team doesn't realize that to bring peace, you need more guns than we as a nation have been willing to use for a while. Congress doesn't realize power and responsibility require actual sacrifice and courage to sustain. And the American people don't realize that to lead, you need to make tough choices but be resolute in the why.
American first - party second.
All the while, Assad and Russia realize that we're constrained and unlikely to actually do anything of note. Because that's how we've acted since 1950.
