In response to "Obviously, The West Wing did it better. "Proportional Response" covered bombing Syrian targets" by TWuG

This scene rang in my head right after 9.11 and especially when we went into Afghanistan... -- (edited)

which I to this day think was weak. But Rumsfeld wanted to test out his team's new military theories of a smarter, more nimble military force and response (he wasn't wrong - just used it in the wrong scenario).

We had high confidence that Bin Laden was in Tora Bora. But all we had was the 10th Mnt Div (I think), Special Forces, Air Force and anti-Bin Laden local fighters. Now I know logistically getting say 100K troops into that country in time to do anything would have been difficult, maybe even impossible but we didn't try. We couldn't cover ever mountain pass in and out of Tora Bora at the time (we probably could have today with the drone tech). I remember Tommy Franks getting on TV and him whining about how "hard" it was. Fuck you, you get all the funding you need, whenever you ask for it. Now we need you to do what needs doing.

I'm going to sound crazy, intellectually and morally I know what I'm about to write is questionable but I would have considered a nuke strike. Literally demolish that mountain range. Bury them all. If I was POTUS I would have been eventually talked out of it but they'd have had to really work hard to dissuade me.

Ultimately, Bin Laden lived a lot longer than he should have.
