In response to "High-speed Hyperloop track ready for first trial run -- (link)" by Strongbad

So long as you're traveling from one desolate, lightly populated area, to another, it's gonna be great!

Hyperloop works best in straight lines. Just like the European and Japanese bullet trains. Our problem is massive urbanization and a resistance to seize property for right-of-way. When this was done in cities for the interstate system, we created areas of haves and have-nots.

In Europe, cities are heavily concentrated in cores with little urban sprawl so getting from a train station in City A to a train station in City B is pretty much a straight shot with little disruption to the route or the urban aesthetic (only in the last few miles do the trains have to slow down).

In Japan, the bullet trains basically ride over the roofs of buildings or squeezed between structures in ways that frankly would be unappealing to American aesthetics.

The problem with Hyperloop isn't the technology. Fuck yeah it's fast. It's the same problem we have with the current built-out of high speed rail in the U.S. We don't have anywhere to put the goddamn trains.
