I don't fly but from what I read airlines are horrible and it seems there's nothing that can be done to make them a better business.

They hit you with a ton of fees, cram you into smaller and smaller seating, overbook flights, cancel flights and leave people stranded, treat and talk to people terribly and just do a rather poor job all around.
How is it that nothing can be done to improve the airlines? I remember reading and hearing about how flying was a great experience and something people looked forward to. But for decades it seems like it's a nightmare that is the worst part of traveling anywhere and can ruin fantastic vacations. How has it gone so wrong? I'm not really looking for answers because that would likely require a history lesson but it's fascinating to see how bad the airlines can be.
