In response to "Heh! Apparently a hot enough fire would have weakened the hull. This theory posits the hull wouldn't have ruptured otherwise. -- nm" by mara

more spoils

the steel used in the hull was inferior and never should have been used. the fire changed it's structure to be 1/4 of the strength it originally had. the fire was so hot it ignited a second fire in the coal storage bin next to it. this fire also warped the bulkheads separating and protecting the compartments.

add to this the ship was several months delayed in sailing and the bosses of the White Star line didn't care why this time, they insisted it sail.
During the finding hearings the bosses also did their best to not have any of the ships firemen be questioned. 80% of the firemen who started the trip in Belfast refused to sail from Northampton to the US.
