Has anyone here used either a handheld telescope or a telescope attachment for your cell phone? Do they work well?

I'm looking for something that allows my solar system-obsessed child to see the planets. Jupiter's next to the moon tonight. I couldn't see it with the naked eye, so I tried downloading a telescope app. I could sort of see it, but it wasn't very clear. Not surprising with a free app. I'm looking for something a little better that's not going to break the bank.
