less points in comparable seasons, but NHL scoring at the top end has steadily decreased over the last ten years.

Benn won the title two years ago with just 88.
(also decreased since the last forever, but that's another story)
Crosby was (and is) more of a goal scorer while McDavid is more of a playmaker and creates chances for others with Bugs Bunny speed - his first two steps are unlike anything I've ever seen.
He's still got some holes - his instinct to pass first is a bit too strong, but a great explanation I heard is that he does it because he can make passes no one else can. His finishing moves are a little too elaborate sometimes too - like three times a game he makes some "stickhandle in a phone booth" move that results in a puck over the crossbar or some such. His faceoff % is surprisingly poor for an elite player.
