groiny, they should know they are overbooked before they board, and deal with it before boarding.

The only thing I can guess is that the crew showed up late in the boarding process. And *IF* I am right about the rules (big IF) that they have to let deadheading crews on, that could have led to the passenger being bumped post-boarding.
I am literally guessing here though.
And *IF* that contract says that crews get positive space, they need to amend to say only BEFORE boarding so you don't kick some off the plane after they boarded
