I mean in retrospect - would United rather have paid the guy 50K to get off or endure all this publicity.

I guarantee that it's cost them 10x that amount already in just PR hours. I'm sure there are several people across the organization who have done nothing but dealt with this.
Eventually, if they offer enough money someone will get off the plane.
