And no, I don't see this happening in other sports -- a baseball player maybe takes of 5% of the games

and rarely do you see a team actually sit more than 1 or 2 players (almost always right after long long games).
And every September, when teams are just playing out the string, whenever a playoff contender is in town, they play their best.
Football - sure stars get sat in game 16 -- but there's a clear reason to do so when nothing is at stake (Derek Carr's leg for instance)
Hockey - I don't recall this level of sitting players, it's too vital to keep a rhythm.
Only basketball has this level of nonsense, in large part due to schedule -- but no sports organization tolerates sitting players in this situation in the last game of the season.
