But it wasn't the only form of top 40 music either. A band could be a very successful rock band and still fail to chart and thus be mainstream

Alright, maybe it is a poorly constructed sentence ;-)
But having grown up as a fan / victim of 70's top 40 music (well and later as well I guess), I'd never heard of them until Freeze Frame so 80's mainstream success.
However in reading about them, they not only survived the 70's, they thrived so they had their fans
