McCain worker who concocted story to be released

A McCain campaign volunteer who created a one-day national sensation when she concocted a story of a politically motivated assault is to be released from jail today and is headed for a probation program.
Ashley Todd of College Station, Texas, waived her right to today's preliminary hearing in Municipal Court.
Officials announced that the jail's behavior clinic had cleared her for release and found her competent to stand trial.
But a trial won't be necessary if she successfully completes terms required for her today.
She will be released to an uncle in New York State and must provide proof every two weeks that she is receiving counseling. Eventually she is to return to her mother's home in Texas.
Ms. Todd is to enter the county's Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition program, which allows non-violent, first-time offenders to have their records expunged if they successfully complete the terms of their probation.
Ms. Todd has admitted she made up a story of a black robber who attacked her in Bloomfield after he spotted McCain stickers on her car. She said he carved the letter B on her cheek with a knife.
Today, the B was no longer apparent on her face.
More details in tomorrow's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
