The seats part in the IM is important. While AA and UA don't charge for seat assignments like Frontier....

...they do block a number of seats as preferred or for elites only (some of which they are happy to let a non-elite pay for). In some cases on AA these blocked seats can be LOTS of seats, leaving mostly / only middle seats in the back of the aircraft, which makes you have to pay to sit together. So check what's available
