They reached the point that with his tape, he was so completely defenseless they went for the "SERIOUSLY?!??!" angle.

hindsight it's a loser, but at the time, there were people up and down the political spectrum thinking he was dead in the water in October after that tape came out.
It wasn't like it was just MDH thinking it was over; it was over via every metric known to anyone in the business. Black swan event level of "He's only mostly dead."
