Just to clarify, I think the years are important, but I don't think it's just the years.

People had been hearing for 25 years what an ambitious and deceitful and nasty woman Hillary Clinton is. How much of that criticism would have been made in the first place if she wasn't a woman or the First Lady?
But yes, if they'd been hearing the same stuff for only a couple of years, it would not have had as much impact.
