agreed. there's no reason not to do it. It's just a matter of funding. It gets a dicey, perhaps, when you have to pick a standard or worst still...

a product. Picking a single vendor essentially kills all other systems.

One of my former boss' is working on the standardization of the technical structure of this. He's scary smart so I think we're in good hands (at least regionally).

The vendor product I work on has a regional component which ties together dispirit organizations, who use their product none the less and ties them loosely together. If you have a record with the vendor it doesn't matter if the organizations are different - they can technically and with little interference share the information.
