and yet there is stragetic justification that can be believed, for the US to be there.

Unfortunately.
I think the case can be made for an active US presence there with a similar duration of what we have with Japan or Europe. In fact, until recently I would argue it's more important to be in Afghanistan than Japan or Europe...at least until China started deploying aircraft carriers and Putin got ballsy.
