Chicago vs Seattle rainfall

Perceptions can be very misleading. Let's start with a Chicago-Seattle comparison. Average annual precipitation in Chicago is 35.82 inches; in Seattle it's 37.19 inches. Seattle's precipitation falls mostly as gentle but long-lasting rains, whereas Chicago often receives short but intense rainfall that is more likely to cause flooding.
Cities to the south and east of Chicago (all the way to the Gulf and Atlantic coasts) all receive more precipitation than Chicago, mostly 40-55 inches annually. It's generally drier to the southwest, west and northwest, with the exception of the higher mountains and the Pacific Northwest.
