I saw Alien: Covenant and it was better than Prometheus (low bar). It's OK if you accept it for what it is (spoilers)

It's basically a horror movie in space. And whether you call it tropes or homages, it's all basically there, from the monster jumping out of dark hallways to the couple having sex getting killed. There's the psych-out with the flute, too. It's all in the Cabin in the Woods manual.
In the context of the Alien mythology, it answered many questions and asked new ones, for instance: these baldies are the aliens who created the virus... did they not expect it to come back to their homeworld? The xenomorphs on LV-426 (Alien & Aliens) come from a baldie ship, so how'd that happen? And if we want to accept the Alien vs. Predator storyline, these xenomorphs have been around for thousands of years, so David didn't create them through genetic engineering after all.
As for this specific movie, it's always a good sign when the first thing you do is kill James Franco. I feel Billy Crudup is being typecast as the religious guy, but he seems to embrace it. And I always like Demián Bichir. There's still a fair bit of stupid, though. David cutting and coloring his hair is suspicious but the only person who sees this before it's too late is Walter and, later, Oram, who should have known better than to trust David by that point (sure, follow him in the basement; sure, look into the pod...) These people needed to stop splitting up. And Daniels' plan to kill the xenomorph is just nuts. Medical scans should detect the alien embryo inside Lope, but it didn't happen on the Nostromo and it didn't happen here.
I can't say anything about them mistaking David for Walter. Maybe Mother would have known, but David could have reprogrammed her. David covered his tracks. The David vs. Walter fight is the single best part of the movie.
