The analogy to 'imagine if NY started taking credit for BBQ' is 'imagine if British Columbia started taking credit for poutine'. And of course that would be ridiculous.

Now imagine if the USA recognized bbq as a beloved national dish. That's the equivalent of what the article is discussing.
