most votes doesn't always win. that's always been a factor in your system.

the electoral college has been around for hundreds of years, it's not as though this was an out of nowhere, impossible outcome. and either way there are similar effects in most democracies. 60% of Canadians voted for someone other than Trudeau, but he has 55% of the seats, and more or less all the power. if you're avoiding democratic countries for political reasons, you're probably almost always 'punishing the majority' in some sense.
