John Tyler came up in a Jeopardy question today so I looked him up. His disastrous presidency gives hope to the Union.

He was pro-states rights (and thus pro-Southern states).
He advocated for manifest destiny and statehood for Texas.
He made a b-line to the White House when Harrison died and immediately took the oath of office, something that, basically, had never been done before because the situation had never arisen, so he made up the rules as he went. Arguably, he seized power in the wake of Harrison's death.
He determined that the President should make policy, not Congress, and was at odds with both parties, the opposition Democrats and his own party, the Whigs, who threw him out.
He vetoed a number of bills and became the first President to have his veto overturned by Congress.
Much of his cabinet quit early on.
He couldn't run for re-election because neither party will have him.
And when the civil war broke out, he sided with the south.
A lot of this parallels Trump. If America survived Tyler, it can survive Trump.
