I certainly tried to beat them out of the gym but it would have taken an hour. I beat the new Pokemon but it was at 2500 and my win only knocked it down -- (edited)

like 218 CP. I can't spend an hour fighting in a gym and then if I win there's a chance that was all for nothing as it could be taken away by someone just strolling by and seeing it gray.
