Yes, they are going to need to change some things in that regard.

Some people won't get coins because they live in an area with really high turnover rate and nothing stays in for over an hour. Some people won't get coins because they live somewhere with no turnover so nobody will ever knock them out of a gym so they won't ever get coins. Some people will lose a lot of potential coins when they are knocked out of multiple gyms after just over 4 days since there is a daily cap of 100 coins. In the past if you had 10 pokemon in gyms for 105 hours and collected as soon as your timer was up and were then kicked out of all those gyms, at least you would have ended up with 500 coins. If the same thing were to happen now, you would only get 100 coins total.
At least people are now capped at 20 gyms. Though people who would have that many are usually spoofers and/or botters who have had their options of what they can put in gyms limited.
