You're pretty spot on with your IM.

It's like the instruction booklet would essentially be "hey, you figure it out."

Essentially there are 5 levels of raids. Level 5 will likely be for legendaries and very difficult. When you are able to do raids, spinning a gym stop can give you a raid pass. You can only hold one free raid pass at a time, and can only get 1 per day. You can buy premium passes for 100 coins each. At some points, an egg will appear above a gym with a countdown timer. When the timer is up, a pokemon will hatch. You then have an hour to go to that gym, use a raid pass, and beat that raid boss pokemon. That pokemon will be a stronger version of a regular pokemon. About 9-10 times stronger. Up to 20 people can fight it at the same time. If you win, you get rewards. These can include revives (and potentially other regular stuff, but you'll probably need the revives), rare candy (can be substituted for any candy), golden raspberries (like a much better raspberry), and TMs (allow you to re-roll a pokemon's move). You also get some premier balls, the amount varies on a number of factors. You use them in the bonus stage. In the bonus stage the boss shrinks to a normal CP range (drops to about a tenth of what it was) and you get a chance to catch it using the premier balls. If you run out, it flees. If it flees, I think you can try and do the raid again until you either catch it or the raid timer runs out. I forgot to mention that once the battle starts, you have 2-5 minutes to beat the boss. I don't know what determines how much time you have, likely level of the raid.
