it's mostly a practical thing. should be noted that not everyone follows it, some stick to their own homes/physical-wall compounds.

that's the practical aspect - when people started living farther apart, like in cities, and what's covered is smaller tasks, walls weren't going to cut it and stuff still had to get done or else quality of life was going to be the suck.
