That said, while it would be great for everyone to support minority groups even without personal interaction, we know from experience that, in some cases, those personal interactions help. Should it be that way? Not really. Is it that way for everyone? No way. But we know it works. That's why there was some pressure on gays to come out in all their relationships (work, etc) during the gay marriage push. Meeting someone from a minority group (or more likely in this case, finding out you know someone from said group) is a powerful view conversion tool.
