Right but in extreme instances, players with rich shoe contracts and the like could take whatever they want to play.

Brady's smart about this in the NFL. He understands that his lower salary helps the team roster, giving him a better chance at rings. Michael Jordan used to do this, too. At one point, Glenn Robinson was making more on his rookie contract than Jordan was as the best player in the league.
