Jordan simply believed that he signed the contract and that it was fair. As he said, he traded some potential upside for longer term security. He,

correctly, recognized that he made a binding agreement that he was comfortable with when he made it. As soon as that contract expired he became by far the highest paid guy in the league. It may still be the record. He was making in the $33-36 million dollar/year range in his last couple of years.
