Updates from Lisa (John's Sister)
"I spent about 6 hours with John today. He was transferred yesterday from Shock Trauma to a rehab facility in the Baltimore area. He is unhooked from everything except a feeding tube and oxygen.
He was alert for two long periods today and he was very intent on communication. He is trying so hard to use gestures to tell us what he's thinking. I saw some of his mannerisms today and some of his personality. He tried writing during his speech and language eval and grabbed the penright away and began writing letters but nothing made any sense.
He really seems bothered by the feeding tube and keeps pointing to it and indicating that he's hungry. He needs to have a swallow exam done and therapy can begin to help him with liquids if he's able to swallow.
He isn't able to express if he's clear on details of his life like what his last name is (he nodded his head when he was asked if his first name was Johnny but he also nodded his head when asked if his last name was Smith :) ) or where he lives. He does know who his family members are and he gestured that he loves his wife."
