I feel it's more like the abused spouse claiming she didn't call the police when she really did.

I understand that she's afraid and her felon partner has a gun when he shouldn't have one and he threatened her life and the last thing she wants is for him to think she called the police on him. It's a lot easier to say a machine did it.
