I think I'm an outlier. I tend to refer to both by what they actually are (i.e. if I'm talking about athletic shoes of some sort I would refer to

them as running shoes or tennis shoes depending on their purpose). More generically I'd probably call them gym shoes. I think of sneakers as less an athletic shoe than a casual rubber soled shoe. For drinks I will generally call a coke a coke or 7up a 7up. Generically I'd probably say a soft drink.
