I've barely followed this, but I think the issues I have with that article are different from other people's.

The sandwich shop had different names for sandwiches, and used Italian names for the fillings. Food companies differentiate their product through proprietary names and different ingredients all the time, whether you're at Chipotle or Starbucks or McDonalds.
It's not just food companies that do this - home products companies, airlines, car makers, all differentiate between their customers based on class and income. And equally, people do select goods and services to indicate and advertise their social class and income. What's the solution - end consumerism?
Also, it never occurred to him to help his friend through that social awkwardness by explaining that sopresata is just a type of salami, or capicollo is just a type of ham? He didn't help her fit in, he reinforced that she didn't fit in.
