That one really isn't unhinged at all. Remember Sessions had to recuse himself from the Russian probe.

So the Russian probe fell into the hands of Rosenstein who has proven himself too hands-off and independent.
If he can get Sessions to resign, so this doesn't look as blatant as firing him, he gets a new AG. The new AB automatically outranks Rosenstein and thus control of the Russian probe and Mueller falls to him.
He probably already has someone in mind.
