I look at that type of movie as less a rote exercise than you do. The flash-jumps were part of that story. I think something like John Wick is more

like what I'm thinking.
We know it's a straight forward revenge movie early on. Those end with the hero victorious.
And John Wick does that, but is exhilarating all the way through.
