My Irish/Scottish grandmother basically distrusted all non-english speakers.

()Note: She herself was an immigrant who came to Canada when she was 14.)
i can remember as a kid watching something (like, it was something stupid, possibly the Miss Universe pageant or something) at her house. A Chinese speaker had a translator with them. And i remember this vividly because even as a kid this seemed like a crazy thing for her to say. My grandmother said "She should be speaking English!" and my mother said "She doesn't speak English, she's Chinese" and my grandmother said "Of course *they* speak English! Everyone knows how. She's just pretending so they can spy on us."
My grandmother was not a conspiracy theorist just a small town woman who truly believed this crap.
