the whole "kids are as safe as the 70s" thing...I kinda half agree with that...

On one hand...I rode a bike, a skateboard (and not one of these planks the kids ride now...I'm talking the hard plastic $9.99 K-Mart board), scooters and everything else with no helmet, knee pads, elbow pads or anything else for my entire childhood and never had a serious injury.

I crashed...and scraped up a lot of my body at times...but nothing serious.

Playing near or in the street? oh yeah...all the time. When a car came, we yelled "CAR" and everyone got out of the street.

These things...I don't think have changed that much. So in this respect, I think the author is right...

However...I had a Scout den of 7 boys and in a 60 day span, 1 of them had a kid jump the back fence and beat him up, one had his bike straight taken from him by an older kid and 2 others were approached by someone with a knife to take their bikes.

Now...I went out first thing in the morning and came home at dark almost everyday of the summer for years and i was never approached by someone with a knife and never had a kid or teenager try to steal my bike or anything like that.

in that respect...I think things have changed dramatically.

There's an air of "fuck working for something...i can just take it from a smaller/weaker person" and THAT'S what's fucking dangerous as hell right now.

These little fucktards will stab you for $2 nowadays.
