Pretty much anything from Sony, Sanyo, JVC or Panasonic.

Get whatever $999 model you can find from those manufacturers. They're all interchangeable until you get to the minutia (which the lay person will never notice). I'd recommend 1080p HD with a hard drive. That's as far as I'd go on specs until you were more specific as to what you wanted to do with it.
