So in reading the Dunkirk reviews: Do Americans really not know the story?

I'm to some degree an Anglophile so my perspective could be considered to be a bit skewed but isn't Dunkirk among the biggest Allied stories of WW II?
Dunkirk was a super big event involving hundreds of thousands of people...does give or take a year before Dec 7 1941 make such a difference? Are Americans generally ignorant of major events of WW II before Pearl Harbor?

I know the general outlines, but no more about the specifics than what was in that one scene in Atonement, you know the one I'm talking about. -- nm

I know the story fairly well, which is why I found the film frustrating. (Spoiler maybe?)

I would not have been able to recite the details from memory last month. I would have guessed air battle. -- nm

WWII was my first historical fascination so I probably know more than the average American but I have to think people generally could put a sentence

I thought Dunkirk was named for Dunkirk Square, an outdoor shopping complex in town.

I confess that I know a lot more about Fuad Reveiz than I do about Dunkirk -- (edited)

I didn't even know it was a true story when I started seeing ads for it. I also though Dunkirk was the name of one of the characters. -- nm

a very good historian could argue WW I started closer to 1912 and ended with WW II
