In response to "I presumed it was well know until I saw Vulture's article 'A Clueless American’s Guide to the Battle of Dunkirk'" by LMS

In school we mostly learn about how the war started/ended and our involvement. There is a lot left out and unless you read about it

on your own you'll only know the big or important battles.
